HS4 FEATURE FUNCTION BENEFIT OVERVIEW

Founded in 1849 by Charles Hager, Hager Companies is globally recognized as a leader in door hardware. Still family owned today, the Hager family continues to expand on a rich 170-year legacy of quality, reputation, and excellence and it is our goal to provide a complete line of quality door hardware to our customers at a competitive price with impeccable customer service.

Based in Spain, Salto Systems, Inc. was founded in 2001 by access control professionals looking for a better, more economical solution. Salto, which translates to Jump in English, has provided a better access control solution for a fraction of the cost. During the past 16 years, over 19,500 customers in over 90 countries have made the jump to a more dynamic, reliable, and cost friendly access control locking solution.

By coming together, we can now provide Hager powered by Salto giving our customers not only a trusted and valued foundation but a range of products that increases productivity.

Before you start exploring the operational, security and user experience features and benefits, let us briefly describe the technology. You can find more information the How it Works section.

There are three primary HS4 platforms and depending on the user needs, each provides a different set of benefits.

Stand-Alone Network (SAN) is an offline system that uses the Portable Programming Device (PPD) to transfer audit data from the locks to the software as well as to update the locks with user credentials. This is very similar to many other access control systems but unlike most systems, the HS4 SAN platform can be easily upgraded to the SVN platform.

Salto Virtual Network (SVN) is a highly responsive and secure data-on-card system that allows the user’s credentials to not only write but read as well. In other words, when the smart card is presented to the HS4 lock or access point, two-way communication occurs. The lock and the smart card communicate and exchange specific data such as user access rights, battery status, and an updated blacklist of deleted and added users as well as lost cards. At access points, usually high traffic openings, user key cards are re-validated every day and given an updated blacklist to spread throughout the facility. This process also allows for audit trail data to be extracted and transferred to the SQL database. With the SVN platform, the users and their credentials are the network.

Real-time Wireless Network (RWN) provides system administrators with real-time functionality such as immediate blacklist updates, door position status, and lockdown capabilities. The HS4 wireless platform provides system administrators with the same control found in traditional wired systems but without the higher product and installation investment.

The HS4 platform has successfully proven to be robust, dynamic, responsive, cost-efficient, and secure.

USER EXPERIENCE BENEFITS

There is a multitude of benefits that extends throughout the process from the ease of ordering and system design to updating user access rights.

Architect:
The HS4 system provides the building owner and administrator the benefits of a traditional wired access control solution but at a fraction of the cost. There are no wires to run or a checklist of products to get power to and from the lock.

Installer:
Wireless means quicker and easier installation. It also means fewer callbacks.
Fits any door – new construction and retrofit applications are quick and easy to install and with a wide range of products, the HS4 system has a solution for almost every door and application.

Owner & Administrator:
Effective and time-saving management of all online, offline and wireless access points and applications in one software package.

Different applications apart from doors can be included, including elevators, letter boxes, lockers, machinery or waste containers.

Software structured around users and doors, easy navigation, user-friendly management of user groups, multi-station functionality (web-based), multi-site functionality (Partitions).

Open architecture and standardized interfaces allow seamless integration with various video, alarm, security & building management systems.

Multi-application allows one credential to be used for secure and efficient processing, issuing, encoding and validating of different applications including access control, cashless vending and T&A.

Update the access plan quickly, easily and securely.

Multiple opening modes to customize each door and to allow a specific set of access rights to each user:
  • Standard – door is always locked from the outside with free egress from the inside
  • Office Mode – door can be unlocked from the outside by the user
  • Timed Office Mode – door can be unlocked at specific times and lock automatically on a schedule (times, days of the week, holiday and weekends, etc.)
  • Automatic Open – door can be unlocked based on a specific schedule
  • Toggle – user presents their card to unlock the door and presents it again to lock the door from the outside (timed toggle can be set to prevent this function on a specific schedule)
  • Keypad – locks with a keypad can be set to work with a keypad PIN entry only, keypad PIN + Card, or card only and can be programmed to a schedule

SECURITY BENEFITS

The HS4 platform is designed to be a robust and dynamic cost effective access control solution that is delivered through innovation, reliability, and security. These are continuous efforts delivered to the market through extensive Research, Development, and innovation, Manufacturing, and Quality protocols between both Hager Companies and Salto.

The HS4 platform is compatible with the most common RFID technologies and makes use of their specific security implications and encrypted data transmissions (Mifare, Mifare plus, DESFire, DESFire EV1, Legic prime, Legic advant, HID iCLASS, SKIDATA, Picopass).

Data Encryption and Network Security:
  • Uses AES128 bits encrypted radio frequency communication – based on IEEE 802.15.4 at 2.4Ghz – to transfer information from escutcheons to the PC through strategically located gateways or nodes, providing enhanced real-time suitability, network collision avoidance, and integrated support for secure communications
  • SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) ensures the data being passed between the escutcheon and gateways remain secure and private
Administrative Security Benefits:
  • Monitors on-duty personnel and contractors
  • Compatible with third party or facility management systems
  • Automatic alerts highlight locks with low battery levels
  • Standard models and infrastructure enable installations worldwide
  • Lockdown is available on all wireless solutions and optional on some SVN systems with AMOK
  • Cancel lost and stolen cards without walking to manually update each lock

OPERATIONAL BENEFITS

Access control systems can be deployed in almost any type of facility and with a varying range of system and product benefits. Depending on what is expected and needed from the system, traditional access control locking solutions can be a significant investment.
The HS4 platform is a robust and dynamic solution that can provide tailored benefits to nearly every type of installation at a fraction of the upfront and ongoing costs.

The innovative structure and flexibility of the HS4 system create many benefits over traditional solutions:
  • Enhance productivity by issuing staff specific access rights to specific openings and track their activity through audit trails, transfer selected data to synchronized third party human resources databases, track contractor activity, and much, much more
  • On-the-fly changes to user access rights, blacklists, door and lock programming, etc.
  • Smart battery management – HS4 provides alerts before the batteries are dead and since the data is mostly stored on the card or transmitted through the encrypted network infrastructure, each door lock requires only three AA batteries compared to the other leading systems that may require up to 8 batteries
There are many cost-saving maintenance benefits of the HS4 system:
  • Losing keys is an imminent nightmare and those costly mistakes can be mitigated with HS4. Most access control systems require the locks to be updated which means walking to each of them and uploading the new user lists. With the HS4 system, simply issue a new card and update the blacklist of lost and stolen cards.
  • Updating locks and gathering audit trail data can be costly if an employee has to walk to each lock with a programming device. The innovative HS4 system implements secure and responsive methods for doing just that from the administrator’s computer.
  • The HS4 system reduces maintenance costs by having better control of important information like battery status transmitted via data-on-card technology (SVN) automatically to the management software.
  • The administrator can quickly and easily execute all access plan updates on the system such has instant changes to user access privileges and can control the entire property.
  • The HS4 system provides the ability to operate multiple facilities from single or multiple workstations and to track facility maintenance tasks.
  • Complete hardware and software platform, which fits virtually any door and any access point and suits all vertical markets.
Simplifies installation and reduces material cost:
  • Maximized ROI through buy-once philosophy, meaning no more licensing fees
  • Upfront investment is substantially less than with traditional wired access control solutions with their complex installation as well as hardware and ongoing software licensing models
  • No wiring means lower material costs and quicker and easier installation
  • With a full suite of unique products, the HS4 is adaptable to any kind of door, including cabinets, padlocks, existing deadbolts and a number of unique situations
Open architecture and standardized interfaces allow seamless integration with various video, alarm, security & building management systems:
  • Future-proof scalability, platform adapts easily to keep pace with evolving requirements
  • Integration of legacy credentials, and compatibility with other systems through multi-application card technology
HS4 hardware is designed to cost effectively meet international wireless technology standards.

Insurance costs can be minimized thanks to the general security benefits of the HS4 system.

Finally, systems can be upgraded at any time without changing the hardware. For example, an SVN system is designed as wireless ready can easily be upgraded to a wireless system without changing the software.

The two most basic needs that access control solutions provide are cost management and security management solutions and the HS4 system allows you to address both to the degree that best fits your needs and budget.
